40 years ago, Margrit Biever Mondavi looked out across the lush green space of the winery’s expansive lawn and thought, “why not have a little music?” After borrowing a stage from the local high school and cobbling together a collection of chairs, the first Robert Mondavi Winery Summer Festival Concert was born in 1969. Since then, legendary artists from Ella Fitzgerald to Los Lobos, Tony Bennett to Tears for Fears have performed in this remarkable and unique open-air setting. An estimated $2 million from the festival’s concerts have benefited musical programming in the Napa Valley.
Smokey Robinson, presented by Napa Valley Opera House, will ensure the sun isn’t the only source of heat in Napa Valley when the “King of Motown” himself takes center stage at the Winery. Robinson’s influence in the American music industry has earned him a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Most recently, Robinson has released a gospel album.
