Ten years ago a massive fire ripped through the Wines Central warehouse in Vallejo, destroying 4.5 million bottles of fine wine worth $250 million, making it the largest crime involving wine in history. The fire had been deliberately set by a Sausalito businessman and self-proclaimed oenophile, Mark Anderson.
More than 90 wineries and private collectors lost wine in the inferno, including Long Meadow Ranch, Viader Vineyards, Saintsbury, Robert Sinskey, ZD Wines, Tres Sabores, Sterling Vineyards, Caldwell Vineyard, and many, many more.
Frances Dinkelspiel, an award winning journalist and author, lost something in the fire too: 175 bottles of Port and Angelica made by her great-great grandfather in 1875 from the famed Cucamonga Vineyard in southern California.
Now Dinkelspiel has written a book about the arson, its aftermath, Anderson, and the history behind her family's liquid heirlooms. Tangled Vines: Greed, Murder, Obsession and an Arsonist in the Vineyards of California will be published on Oct. 6.
Publisher's Weekly called the book 'cinematic'.
The author's gripping descriptions of the fire and its aftermath, her unflinching narrative, and her vast knowledge of the subject matter make this a page-turner for both wine aficionados and casual tasters.
